Risk factors included a previous episode of low back pain, high training volume, and periods of load increase and exposure to these. (1) What are treatment options? Physician members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine are recorded as using a number of different complementary alternative medicine treatments for sports related pain issues. A recent survey of these physicians reported that 88% of the 11% who replied that they suggested CAM had done so for at least one type of CAM in the last 12 months. (2) Another study stated that 53.1% of physicians advocated at least one such CAM option in the past 12 months. Massage therapy, chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation, herbs/non-vitamin supplements, yoga, and acupuncture were most recommended. Family/general family practice physicians recommended chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation most often. More female than male physicians were more prone to recommend massage, herbs/supplements, yoga, acupuncture, and mind-body therapies.
