Melons Tasty and nutritious. Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc takes care of back pain and neck pain and all such spine-related pain and knows nutrition is important in healing and sustained health. Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc encourages healthy eating, and fruits provide great nutrition benefits. Future thinking researchers are even trying novel ways to grow healthy melons enough to keep us all fed! Fort Wayne chiropractic services clients will find that research very interesting!

BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every part of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – supplied health benefits in a new study. A specific melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – piqued researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and stimulation of thyroid function. (1) Agricultural researchers utilized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to study the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They found 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthful melons contributes to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us do not think about is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are said to be susceptible to surface contamination. What did researchers do to try to tamp down this issue? They created a hybrid by crossing them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to create an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is reported to be good sources of quite a few human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained at length just where the nutrients are in several parts of the fruit tissues! (3) Amazing what grabs a person excited, isn’t it?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another curious side note discovered in doing research on the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (particularly the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process didn’t adversely affect the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still present including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s investigators are trying as our world population expands to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
