Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?
If you've ever dealt with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs matter to your daily well-being and mobility. Now, exciting new research is examining a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to reduce the pace of disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 took a closer look into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin supports nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory pathway and enhancing a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this helps disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and operating more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration activity.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct angle. (2) Using cutting-edge genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of tissue hardening — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help prevent this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While more research is necessary before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a helpful role alongside non-invasive, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
