Fort Wayne Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

June 23, 2026

VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!

If you've ever had your chiropractor bring up vitamin D, there's very good reason for that conversation. Researchers are finding more and more that this sunshine vitamin plays a bigger role in our health than we once realized — and two studies published just this year make that case especially well for those of us in our later years. At Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Fort Wayne — read on to see what the latest science reveals about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!

WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US

A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 examined 69 clinical trials involving nearly 154,000 participants to evaluate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of falls and fractures. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was linked to a somewhat decreased risk for fractures — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent struggle after a fall. While no supplement is a magic bullet, this kind of large-scale evidence helps guide practical, whole-person care. (1)

The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — exploring what vitamin D means for our health across the full range of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is linked with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling. That's big! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most important protection we have. (2)

MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US

What's noticeable is that the research found roughly 6 in 10 older adults are vitamin D-deficient — and the consequences reach well beyond bones, touching muscle health, heart function, brain health, and even how long we live. Simply put, vitamin D is one of those nutrients our whole body is counting on. (2)

YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED

Here at Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you to us. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to alleviate back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works beautifully alongside good nutrition. When your vitamin D levels are where they should be, the muscles and bones bordering your spine are better able to respond to chiropractic care — and that means what we do in the office together in the office may be more long-lasting.

Many of us, especially those of us spending more time indoors, are running low without knowing it. Whether it's a supplement, a little more time in the sun, or vitamin D-rich foods like salmon and fortified dairy, little things add up.
