April 06, 2021

Clues: What links these symptoms together – irritation, pain, redness, headache, fogging?

Answer: COVID 19.

Over the past year, we’ve all found ourselves suffering with some new aches and pains in unexpected ways. Glasses’ fogging. Irritation of the nose. Redness of cheeks. Back of ear irritation. Neck pain. Headache. The protective gear has its down-sides in addition to its up-sides. Your Fort Wayne chiropractor is here to help lessen some of the associated pains like headache and neck pain. Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc invites Fort Wayne headache and neck pain sufferers to come in for a chiropractic visit.

ISSUES WITH MASKS THAT RESULT IN Fort Wayne NECK PAIN AND HEADACHE

Masks and mask-wearing have down sides. One study of nurses reported headache affected 73.4%, extreme sweating affected 59.6%, breathing difficulty bothered 36.7%. Goggle or glasses’ fogging was reported by 91.7%. N95 wearers reported issues with nasal bridge scarring in 76.6% and pain and indentation of the back of the ears by 66.4%. (1) A recent study of nurses who wore masks and other PPE for greater than 4 hours at a time found that vision problems bothered 47.9% of them as did redness of cheeks/nose bridge/ears, dry mouth, and headaches. (2) One study of healthcare workers focused on the occurrence of headache during COVID-19. 81% stated that they acquired novel PPE (mask/eye wear)-linked headaches. 33% of them described suffering headaches before COVID. 91.3% of those pre-existing headache sufferers said that improved mask/eye wear equipment affected their headache control and work. (3) Overall headache occurrence due to PPE (mask/eye) was 62% in another report. Working more than 8 hours at a time increased the risk of new headache incidence. Discomfort, blurred vision, and reduced concentration were other reported issues. Wearing such equipment worsened pre-existing headache issues and brought on new headache occurrences. NEW PAIN ISSUES AND HELP WITH CHIROPRACTIC

As stated by the American Chiropractic Association, our Fort Wayne chiropractic patients are not alone! Chiropractic patients across the country are reporting some new pain issues with their neck, shoulders, and upper back throughout this past year of the pandemic, particularly those who wear masks for long hours. Certainly, stress is a contributor to pain in normal life. In these times, it’s no surprise that patients are reporting more pain. Masks may well contribute to pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Masks may affect vision. If a mask rests too high, the wearer may tuck the chin to see better or hold the neck in a different way to see better. A better fitting mask may help. More frequent breaks may help. Stretching more often may help. A walk to de-stress is a terrific option! (5) Your Fort Wayne chiropractor understands these issues and is ready to help!
