Postural Changes When Wearing Clear Aligners like Invisalign®

January 02, 2018

Clear teeth aligners and posture!?  Now there is a pair. Not necessarily a pair you would put together though! Fort Wayne teeth aligners are standard today. Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc meets many Fort Wayne chiropractic patients who have chosen to use these new devices to adjust teeth. They are nearly imperceptible. They are flexible. The clear aligner wearer can take them out whenever he or she needs to remove them. Wearers gain some control of the process. All is good, and yet the treatment planning like that of Invisalign® is newer technology. Everyone is learning more about it. Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc had not imagined that orthodontic and Fort Wayne chiropractic treatment plans might come in contact with each other. Surprise!

Most Fort Wayne chiropractic patients recall (too well for some!)  the classic fixed appliances (braces) used by orthodontists to straighten teeth. Many Fort Wayne orthodontic patients experienced them firsthand! Research finds that in using Invisalign® technology, tooth type and movement are key issues to think about when the treatment plan is arranged. Invisalign® technology allows clinicians to calculate tooth positions with high accuracy when done in nonextraction cases, but some of the actual outcomes may differ from those calculations. Most differences were not clinically relevant though. (1) Malocclusion (a misalignment or faulty relationship of the teeth of the two dental arches when they come close to each other as the jaws close) affects teeth straightening treatment planning. In a comparison study of Invisalign® to these conventional fixed appliances for mild to moderate malocclusion issues, they both corrected the condition. Invisalign® wearers completed their care faster (by 5.7 months!). Invisalign® improvement was not as “great” in efficacy as fixed appliances. (2) One study decided to determine correlations between body posture in the sagittal profile and sagittal jaw position. The mandible (lower jaw)  has a greater effect on body posture than other craniofacial parameters, so patients with severe malocclusions ought to be given extra consideration especially if a jaw surgery is being proposed. (3) Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc is fine with having the Fort Wayne orthodontists determine this!

But Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc is fine when called upon to help with any posture issues that arise. A recent study points out that clear, occlusal coverage aligners like Invisalign® may well affect body posture. The the upper and lower spine units are involved. When clear aligner wearers were examined after 6 months of use, the Kyphosis Angle, the Upper Thoracic Inclination and Pelvic Inclination were changed.  It has been said that these clear aligners alter a wearer’s vertical height due to the aligners placement over the teeth and, subsequently, stimulate periodontal receptors hindering the jaw closing muscles and, likely, changing  mandibular posture. (4) Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc is as astonished as our Fort Wayne chiropractic patients with everything that is possible with these clear aligners! Cox Chiropractic Medicine Inc is aware of this potential and looks for it in Fort Wayne chiropractic patients who wear these.
